Philosophy on Education:
Student education is much more than standardized test scores. Education should be whole child and address all needs. True education cultivates a combination of intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, creativity and core knowledge. When students develop curiosity, learning happens everywhere and all the time. In a world awash in sophistry, critical thinking skills allow the student to decide on their own what is true and meaningful. Creativity allows students to become intellectual trailblazers and revel in beauty that stirs the soul. Perhaps most important and most dismissed is cultural literacy. Students need a core knowledge of essential facts to discern objective reality, and this component has been downplayed in modern pedagogy. Awareness of our customs and institutions, our seminal figures and our history is required to participate actively and effectively in our democracy. Cultural literacy is more important than ever. Educators plant seeds each day, and I believe the results of that effort should be viewed with a long-term view and with the contributions of all stakeholders.
